Backyard - Global Gardeners Create Food System Change One Garden at a Time

Elements of this initiative include:

  • Promotion of "Global Gardening" / Backyard Garden and Farm Network
  • Building a network of "Global Gardeners" - Backyard Gardeners & Farmers
  • Interviewing and celebrating local gardeners on this web site
  • Development of an annual event that celebrates the work of everyday gardeners who do extraordinary things through the universal medium of gardening

Global Gardeners are gardeners with a global mission, but who literally and figuratively "ground" their work in their backyards, communities, or schoolyards.

The human experience of the environment is complex. We are products of nature and nurture. Our ability to function in life is deeply impacted by our ability to interact and cope with our environment. Gardening and horticulture perhaps represent humanity’s oldest and earliest organization of the skills required to draw out from nature that which sustains us, materially and non-materially.

The gardening experience has a powerful affect upon human sociology, vocation, recreation, organization, and psychology. Becoming a Global Gardener means one understands the global implications of gardening and therefore the tremendous responsibility that comes with it. This initiative will focus on some of these amazing Global Gardeners, and present opportunities to view agricultural and horticultural traditions in ways that have global meaning and importance.

We are building a network of backyard gardeners and others who might consider themselves to be "Global Gardeners." We believe that even the simplest acts of gardening have global significance. The definition of a "Global Gardener" is open ended; please join us in what promises to be a rich conversation with others who share your gardening spirit and interests.

We would like to interview you, and share your gardening work with others in the community. For additional information, please contact Wolfram Alderson by clicking here.
