Urban Farming Intern
The goal of the Collective Roots Center for Urban Agriculture is to model a variety of agricultural and horticultural techniques that can be utilized in home food production in East Palo Alto, including permaculture, square foot gardening, traditional row cropping, and community plot gardening.
The Center for Urban Agriculture team at Collective Roots is working to:
• understand which crops can be grown successfully in EPA
• increase the productivity of our open space
• increase our composting capacity
• develop a seed saving program for our East Palo Alto Seed Library
Internship Description
Depending on schedule, availability and interest, the Urban Farming intern will participate in any of the following tasks:
• Building and monitoring active compost piles.
• Feeding the worm bins and harvesting worm-castings.
• Experimenting with different varietals to see which are successful in EPA’s climate.
• Reviving the herb garden.
• Develop a farm plan for cultivating crops used frequently in Collective Roots’ programming.
• Develop a seed garden to save seeds for the East Palo Alto Seed Library
The Urban Farming Intern will work 5-10 hours a week, depending on availability. The intern will report directly to Nicole Wires, Food System Change Coordinator at Collective Roots. This is an unpaid internship opportunity, however it does offer opportunities to attend trainings in food justice and local community food security.
Qualifications
Relevant experience is desired but not required! All applicants with a general interest in food justice issues and an eagerness and energy to contribute will be considered.
