Roots

In the world of plants, the root is the part of a plant structure that typically grows beneath the surface of the soil. Wikipedia has a page all about plant roots here.

Most often, when we think of roots, we think of plant roots. However, there are many different kinds of roots. Check out the definitions of Roots here.

There are many expressions and terms that use the word “root” or “roots.”

To “root for” means to advocate, to applaud, to assist, to address, to acclaim, or to delve in to.

We might also be speaking of

“Collective Roots”

“Cultural Roots”

“Putting down roots"

“Rooting about in the garden”

The Spanish word for roots is raíces.

The need for roots, collective as well as personal, is a matter of importance to all people. Many humans enjoy coming together to nurture their collective roots, and to fulfill a part of the need for kinship--the desire to belong to a larger human family and to connect with the earth. In the work of the organization Collective Roots, we are collectively planting our roots in common ground, and finding a shared identity in the nexus of the garden.
