Illusions

Anna Lappe and Bryant Terry wrote a book called GRUB: ideas for an urban organic kitchen. In the book, they argue that the way we think and interact with our food system is based upon Six Illusions:

  1. The Illusion of Choice
  2. The Illusion of Safe and Clean
  3. The Illusion of Efficiency
  4. The Illusion of Cheap
  5. The Illusion of Fairness
  6. The Illusion of Progress

The food system we participate involves choices and decisions we make each day, yet Lappe and Terry point out that "few of us feel that we're making these choices....because we're blinded by this mass hallucinatory fantasy, one that is spun by six grand illusions convincing us that ours is the pinnacle of food and farming, that nothing is wrong with the status qou. Living with these illusions, it's hard to see the solutions for what they are: ideas that have been intentionally spread for us to accept what we need not not to accept and acquiesce to what is actually in our own worst interest."
