Soil is Earth (You are from the Earth)

Earth: It’s elemental.

The story of earth-soil is essentially the story of humanity. “Earth” and “ground” are among the oldest words in the human language.

Soil is the basis of our ancient cultures and religions, and for the last 11,000 years, soil erosion has paralleled/preceded human erosion.

All human communities have a cultural, sensual and spiritual attachment to the soil, but many societies have lost this attachment for complex reasons, disconnecting us from the earth.

We have an important role in reconnecting people to soil.

The soil is our greatest hope for survival.

The world’s leading environmental problem is soil erosion.

When the soil erodes, so does the human soul. Soil-soul: why do these words sound so similar? We must promote and preserve this connection.

In The Museum of Primitive Art

"Who said the dead are dead,"

the Thing in the showcase said.

"We are sent here to learn the lessons of toil.

We are sent here to improve the soil.

We are instruments of reality:

experiments in immortality."

Cella Coffin, 1964

Do you toil in the soi, or do you dig in the dirt?
