Please mark your calendars for a great forum which is co-sponsored by the Bay Area Leave No Child Inside Network and the Environmental Studies Institute of Santa Clara University:
November Forum:
“Where Do the Children Play?” and Wild Zones
Date: November 8 at 7 pm
Location: University of Santa Clara, Kennedy Commons
Kennedy Commons is #306 on the attached map, in the corner of Layfayett and Market Streets.
The forum will include a segment of the new PBS film “Where Do the Children Play” and an introduction to “Wild Zones” by David Hawkins and Karen Payne.
“Where Do the Children Play?” is a public television documentary born of a five-year collaborative effort among child development experts, scholars, media producers and children’s organizations and advocates, springing from project originator Elizabeth Goodenough’s anthology, Secret Spaces of Childhood. The film is a rich mix of storytelling and interviews with experts – health officials, planners, educators, psychologists, parents, and children themselves.
Wild Zones is a new land use concept – places for people of all ages to form bonds of caring and connection with the beauty and riches of the natural world. They offer open-ended possibilities for self-designed play, creativity, socializing and opportunities to do practical and adventurous things, such as building shelters, climbing trees, damming creeks, creating sculptures from natural materials and other types of free play. David Hawkins has worked for over 20 years as a counselor, teacher and advocate for young people in schools, colleges, adventure playgrounds, arts centers, their homes, and the street. From 1996-2000 he was project manager of The Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley, California and is featured in the upcoming book “Where Do the Children Play?” edited by Elizabeth Goodenough.
We look forward to seeing you at the next forum – please invite your friends and colleagues.
