We still need your help to reach our 2008 fundraising goal!
During our first season of operating the East Palo Alto Community Farmers’ Market, Collective Roots donated $10,000 worth of produce to the least fortunate residents of our community. With your support, Collective Roots will continue to provide fresh food from our gardens and positive educational and nutritional outcomes in local schools.
The theme of our 2008 annual appeal is our conviction that the youth we serve today truly have the potential to be the future leaders of Silicon Valley. Recently, in response to reading the appeal, someone bluntly asked, "Do you really think it is realistic to believe that your students could become CEOs?" Our answer is an unequivocal, Yes!! Click here to read our appeal and judge for yourself. Or come visit us and see our young leaders in action, working in their school garden, or studying hard so that they can go to college.
Barack Obama was only 7 years old when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. One can imagine the popular response back then if young Barack had declared his intention to become President. Fortunately, there were some forward-thinking adults in young Barack's life who believed in him and supported his dreams, no matter how grand they might have seemed at the time. “The dreams of the few have now become the dreams of the many.”
How we imagine our children’s potential, as well as our own, is very much at the center of the work of Collective Roots. We have dreams, and they are green dreams that weave together organic gardens and food systems, science education and technology, and health-promoting activities that are fun as well as transformative. These green dreams are being fueled and encouraged by a new president, the emergence of new green technologies in Silicon Valley, and a growing awareness that our health is inextricably linked to the educational and community environment.
