Integrated Programs Update: November 2009
Integrated Programs
Last month we reported that CR staffers Mayra Betancourt and Aaminah Khan are working on the development of a Health Career Pipeline Project for youth in East Palo Alto. Mayra reports that she had an “amazing experience” last month shadowing pediatrician Elizabeth Baca at Stanford's Lucille Packard Hospital, and is excited for Aaminah’s, visit with Dr. Baca next week. Mayra and Aaminah will soon conduct a Q & A with Dr. Baca about the H1N1 vaccine, and whether or not she recommends that children be vaccinated. You will be able to read the Q & A on our website shortly.
Meanwhile, one of our summer 2009 Youth Justice Leaders, Epiffani McLemore Hampton, is also a part of the Health Career Pipeline Program. She will soon start to shadow a registered nurse in the neonatal department at Stanford. Epiffani has already met with Dr. Mindy Ju who is a pediatric resident at Stanford. Dr. Ju is interested in doing a longitudinal research study with Collective Roots, and although we are still discussing these possibilities, we are very excited that Dr. Ju has offered to recruit other health professionals into our Pipeline Program. This way, students will have the opportunity to shadow a wide variety of health specialties (Aaminah is particularly interested in shadowing a neurosurgeon, as she is interested in this field for her future career!)
The website for the Healthy Development Measurement Tool (EPA health portal) will have a “soft launch on December 4th. The full premiere will take place in January when it is unveiled to the EPA Health Roundtable.
The Stanford Population Health Program is underway and we will have a formal orientation on November 18th. We will be discussing their involvement with the Road Show and their HDMT data collection, evaluation of the road show and their shadow day (Phoenix Academy high school students will be shadowing the 1st medical students for a day).

Help Collective Roots grow and thrive!
