Garden Programs Intern (updated 4/2/2010)
The Garden Programs Intern will work at multiple garden sites to support Collective Roots' work in developing and maintaining school gardens and programming connected to these gardens. Garden Programs Interns also play an integral role in providing leadership to high school youth who may work with Collective Roots over the summer. Garden Programs Interns' work supports the creation and implementaion of science-based as well as health and nutrition-based programming for students in grades K-12 at up to four garden sites. Interns will also be asked to provide support for community events and activities at these sites, including Community Work Days, service days, summer camp visits, and other garden events.
These are the key areas of Garden Programs Intern support:
1) Programming Support:
- Assisting with summer youth program; lead high school youth in garden-based projects and leadership activities
- Developing curriculum materials, displays and tools
- Researching relevent curriculum and activities to enhance current programs and curriculum
- Creating signs and other interpretive materials for gardens
- Contributing content to the Collective Roots website
- Assisting with the facilitating of groups visiting the garden (i.e. summer camps, corporate, school, etc).
- Organizing and maintaining the upkeep of tools and materials
- Reaching out to partner organizations, groups and residents to establish points of collaboration.
- Collaborating with other Collective Roots staff and interns, especially the Food Systems Change Intern
2) Garden Support:
- Assist with weekly gardening tasks at the main 1-acre garden at the East Palo Alto Charter School and at other partner garden sites in East Palo Alto and Redwood City. Tasks include weeding, planting, seeding, mulching.
- Assist with monthly Community Work Day, the fourth Saturday of each month. Help develop project list in advance, direct volunteers, etc.
- Assisting with the Backyard Gardener Network as needed.
- Assist with chicken care at flagship garden
- Participate in development and implantation of new garden projects
This internship involves work with many volunteers and visitors, including many local residents. Interns will find language skills (Spanish, Tongan and/or Samoan) to be helpful. Potential interns with an interest in education, interpersonal communication, agriculture, and food security will find this experience to be a rewarding one.
Please note that this internship is unpaid. Collective Roots is pleased to work with interns and their educational institutions to obtain academic credit.
