East Palo Alto Charter School Students Reflect on Garden Experiences
Cooking In Garden Class
By Rosario
Have you ever had healthy food fresh from the garden? In garden class, we did all kinds of cooking projects. Most of the ingredients we used were fresh from the garden. We did cooking projects like making green salad with cheese, berry salad, and smoothies.
We did many things to make the green salad with cheese. We used fresh lettuce from the garden. Then we cut apples and cheese. We mixed all that with cranberries. There was also a dressing that some of the students made.
Also, when we got 20 positive points, we went outside to make smoothies. We put strawberries, blueberries, peaches, milk, and yogurt in the blender on the bicycle. Everyone tasted it. Most of the students liked the smoothies.
There are some of the cool cooking projects that we've done in garden class. It was fresh from the garden.
Delicious!!!!
Garden Work
By David
In garden class we do gardening work. One thing that we do in the garden is we mulch. Mulch is little pieces of wood that are shredded up. Before we mulch we have to get into groups.
One reason we mulch is to have better soil. The mulch helps to improve the soil because the mulch keeps the moisture in from escaping.
The second reason why we mulch is because it makes a good pathway to walk on. This is important because we would not want to step on the plants or other things we are trying to grow in the garden. That is why mulching is good for a garden.
What I learned in Garden Class
By James
In garden class we learned a lot. First I will be telling you about our field trip to Hidden Villa. We first went to a farm and harvested some kale and put oil and soy solute on it and then baked it and they called it "kok popcorn"
When we went to Hidden Villa we also saw all sorts of animals. For example we saw a goat, a cow, and we saw other animals as well. This was a very interesting sight to see in class.
In garden class we do all sorts of fun activities such as harvest vegetables, and water plants, and go on awesome field trip such as Hidden Villa.
The last thing I would like to mention is that we all eat things and that some days eat the same things too. This is good because it teaches us how to cook certain foods. I wish that all classes were like garden class.
