MISSION
The mission of Collective Roots is to educate and engage youth and communities in food system change through sustainable programs that impact health, education, and the environment. Collective Roots achieves its mission through the innovative implementation of three program areas: Food Systems Change, Garden-based Education, and Environmental Action. Programs are sustained through a combination of foundation grants, corporate sponsorships and a committed donor and volunteer community. Collective Roots is governed by an active and dynamic board of directors.

General Approach and Strategy: The strategies, goals, and objectives of Collective Roots are accomplished through extensive collaboration with partners, networks, and affiliations that catalyze the social impact of our work. Our organization embodies an entrepreneurial spirit and solves challenges in creative and innovative ways. The core work of Collective Roots demonstrates engaging and multi-dimensional approaches to changing the food system, and improving community and environmental health.

HIGHLIGHTS OF ORGANIZATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Stanford Medical School Honors CR as “Outstanding Community Health Partner
  • Presented at the American Public Health Association’s 2008 conference
  • Hosted Delicious Health, a city-wide health fair

GARDEN-BASED EDUCATION
STRATEGY:  Create environments and programs for learning that provide transformational experiences for students, and also have measurable impacts on education, community and environmental health.

FOOD SYSTEM CHANGE

STRATEGY: Engage the East Palo Alto (EPA) community in creating an improved food system that is focused on establishing food security and health and environmental outcomes.
PERFORMANCE:


ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION
STRATEGY:  Serve as a catalyzing force to address environmental issues impacting community diet and health, including the lack of open space, community gardens, or opportunities for recreation and interaction with nature.

PERFORMANCE:

  • Hosted Baylands/EPA Environmental Health Tour for the CA Biodiversity Council “Children in Nature” Conference
  • Hosted EPA Arbor Day Celebration
  • Implemented CA Releaf Grant supporting the establishment of the EPA Tree Initiative
  • Conducted two EPA Baylands Trailhead Clean-ups
