BOTANICOPEDIA Guide for Content Development

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to help build BOTANICOPEDIA. Here are a few guidelines and tips for assisting Collective Roots in this endeavor.

The first step, if you haven't done so already, is to register on this website. You may do this by clicking here. Once you have done this, then email our Editor in Chief, Wolfram Alderson by clicking here. Express that you are interested in becoming a BOTANICOPEDIA Editor or Contributor. Once we have interviewed you and accepted your volunteer application, we will assign you with editing and contributing rights. We encourage you to fill out a volunteer application by clicking here.

Working within this content management system is fairly easy. We have a self-tutorial guide that you can access by clicking here.

HOW DO I CREATE NEW CONTENT?
If generating a lot of text, suggest writing in simple text (you can write in Word, then save to simple text WITHOUT
LINE BREAKS. The font size is default Verdana 12pt.

Q. What is the easiest way to add content and pages to ROOTPEDIA?

A: Follow these steps:

  • If your topic is “Shovel,” then click on the “S is for Soil” page of ROOTPEDIA while logged in.
  • At the bottom of the page you will see a link that says “add child page.”
  • Click on that and a new window comes up.
  • Title your page Shovel in the “Title” window.
  • Next, select “S is for Soil” as your page’s “parent.”
  • Cut and paste in your copy from a plain text document in 12 pt Verdana font into the window that says “Body.”
  • Add any hyperlinks within the text copy by selecting the hyperlink icon below the “Body” window. The icons look very similar to a Word style editor. The hyperlink icon looks like one link in a chain. If the link is to another page on the Collective Roots website, all you need is the information that comes after .org/ that can be viewed in the URL window at the top of the screen where that content lives. If the link is to an external site, then always place http:// before the www.anyoldsite.edu address.
  • Move on down to “theme” and click to select the appropriate theme, in this case “growing2” or possibly other themes to be developed in the future.
  • No need to select “parent item”
  • Select “url path setting” as rootpedia/s/shovel
  • For “publishing options,” be sure that the page is NOT promoted to the front page.
  • Always remember to click “submit” or your content will be lost.

HOW DO I MAKE 1 SPACE AFTER A PARAGRAPH OR LINE OF TEXT?
Q: I notice that there seems to be a default on the website that creates two lines after you press return after a paragraph or line of text. If I want a single space between paragraphs or lines of text, how do I do that?
A: To create one space between lines of text, hold down Shift and press Return at the same time.

PROBLEMS WITH CUTTING/PASTING ON A WEBPAGE (USING FIREFOX BROWSER)
Q: When I try to edit, paste, delete etc. on the new drupal site, I get an
error message saying I have to change my settings in Mozilla/Firefox.
A: If you use Firefox, Drupal will have a hard time pasting from Word if you don't modify those settings. However if you can cut and paste from a Text editor such as Mac's TextEdit that will work. Safari won't work at all with the text Editor. Explorer may react better.
